Iain McKnight MA (Dist) PGCE
Iain is the MD of our Senior Band.
Iain grew up in Cornwall and began his musical career, aged eleven, as a cornet player at St Austell Band. After a year, he settled on the tuba and, at the age of fourteen, was invited to become a member of the organisation’s senior band.
In April 2005, Iain joined the Leyland Band and served as the band’s chairman from May 2012, overseeing the routine running of one of the country’s most accomplished brass bands. His ten-year membership of the band included winning the 2005 National Brass Band Championships, representing England twice (2006 & 2013) at the European Championships, winning back-to-back North West Regional titles (2012 & 2013) as well as live broadcasts for BBC television & radio and performances across the UK and abroad.
Iain has held positions as musical director at Lostock Hall and Flixton Bands as well as being engaged as a guest musical director by numerous bands including Hebden Bridge and St Austell.
Iain moved to the North West in 2003 to study at the University of Salford, graduating in 2006 with a first class honours degree in Music. During his time at Salford he received awards for conducting, composition and academic achievement; he remains the only student in the thirty-year history of the university’s Music department to have received three awards during their term of study. Postgraduate study followed at both Salford (MA Compositional Studies with distinction) and Manchester Metropolitan University (PGCE Secondary Music) before, in 2008, he started his career in music education.
Iain began working for the Love Music Trust (then Cheshire East Music Service) in November 2010 and is now the Trust’s Instrumental Lead, taking overall responsibility for the delivery of weekly tuition to approximately 3,000 children in Cheshire East through the Wider Opportunties and Play it Again programmes.
A sought-after composer and arranger, Iain has around 20 published works and has had music featured on six studio recordings by, amongst others, Russell Gray (cornet), Kristy Rowe (baritone), Richard Trethewey (folk singer and violinist) as well as Leyland Band. His music has also been featured on national and local radio, commercial DVD and live television.
Outside of work and banding, Iain supports Salford Red Devils RLFC, is a keen follower of the England cricket team and enjoys cycling and cooking despite his lack of inherent aptitude for both!
